How Google works?

Have you wondered why after an ant finds out food how quickly the others arrive and how quickly do these tiny creatures take care of so big a load ! the ant work on collective wisdom to take decisions rather than individual intelligence and therein lies the power that enables them to optimize their meager resources.
When the NASA spaceship Challenger unfortunately broke down taking lives of all astronauts and caused a huge shakeout in NASA’s program the blame of technical failure was laid upon three Companies that made the jet section, the fuel section and the communication section. The NASA took 2 weeks to point the blame on the Company making the jet lining. But the US stockmarket took less than 2 hours to proclaim the verdict. The stocks of all 3 Companies fell heavily immediately after the crash but recovered slightly as the day progressed – the only stock that did not recover that day was that of the Company making the jet lining. How did the stock market come to know in minutes what a NASA probe took 2 weeks to find out? The answer lies in the Collective intelligence of the stock market!!!!
The most popular search engine- the incarnation of information at your fingertips- Google works on the principle of collective intelligence. The algorithm that propels Google is called PageRank.PageRank is a link analysis algorithm which assigns a numerical weighting to each element of a hyperlinked set of documents, such as the World Wide Web with the purpose of "measuring" its relative importance within the set.

Google describes the PageRank as thus :

PageRank relies on the uniquely democratic nature of the web by using its vast link structure as an indicator of an individual page's value. In essence, Google interprets a link from page A to page B as a vote, by page A, for page B. But, Google looks at more than the sheer volume of votes, or links a page receives; it also analyzes the page that casts the vote. Votes cast by pages that are themselves "important" weigh more heavily and help to make other pages "important".

thus Google works on the collective wisdom of the WWW to vote for themselves and their peers and give importance to them accordingly. The results are wonderful with the most relevant pages displayed prominently as if by a mind reading. Numerous papers enumerate the algorithm based on the principles of probability and random walk ( random surfer) and include the discussion of damping ( to make it work faster by preventing oscillations about a particular page )
But the idea is that the use of Collective intelligence is made in many (search decision optimization networks) like the ad-hoc intelligent sensing networks that is a self-communicating net of sensors that make intelligent decisions to procure and report data in terrains where central control is impossible or where there is a link that affects the next ( like traffic signal ) in a non Markovian way.
“Alone I may be wrong alone but we will be right together” Right you are were Mr.Cobain. There is a certain wisdom in the crowds.
